The Favorite Foods of U.S. Presidents Past and Present

Even Presidents need to eat

When you’re the leader of the free world, having a plan for dinner isn’t always easy.

After a long day of shaking hands, kissing babies, and you know, preventing nuclear war and stuff, it would be easy to forget about getting all your vitamins and minerals.

In honor of President’s Day, we wanted to pay homage to some past and present U.S. Presidents and the food that got them through their tough days.

George Washington – Cherries

It is said that George Washington was a very simple and healthy eater who enjoyed mainly fresh fruits and vegetables. Although the whole thing about chopping down the cherry tree is a myth, cherries, were at the top of his list of favorite foods. Apparently, George Washington was into life’s simple pleasures.

Abraham Lincoln – Gingerbread Cookies

Abraham Lincoln loved Christmas – and his mother’s homemade gingerbread cookies -year-round. Who can blame him? Those chewy cookies flavored with ginger, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon and sweetened with honey or molasses are totally irresistible. Especially when they’re shaped as little gingerbread men.

Theodore Roosevelt – Steak with Gravy

Knowing that Teddy Roosevelt loved hunting and gaming, is it any surprise he was a steak kind of guy? Plus, we’re not surprised that a guy with such a stressful job would turn to comfort food to well, comfort him.

Franklin Roosevelt – Grilled Cheese

A President with a penchant for the gooey American classic? And with just three inexpensive ingredients – bread, butter and cheese – we appreciate that Franklin Roosevelt had such a simple palate. He’s got our vote.

John F. Kennedy – New England Clam Chowder

The boy from Boston couldn’t get enough New England Clam Chowder. Who would have thunk? With clams, potatoes, onions and celery, it would make our list, too, if made from that fresh Atlantic seafood.

Ronald Reagan – Jelly Beans

The Gipper had a standard order for 360,070 Jelly Beans to be distributed to the White House and other federal buildings every month. That is real jelly bean dedication. While all that sugar cannot be good for a person, we appreciate that he had a kid-like appetite.

George W. Bush – Cheeseburger Pizza

Although “Dubya” was an avid runner and liked to stay in shape, he couldn’t get over his love of Cheeseburger Pizza. A cheesy pie with the best burger toppings – who can blame him?

Barack Obama – Nachos

Obama told Jerry Seinfeld in an interview that he cannot get enough nachos in his life. “That’s one of those where I have to have it taken away. I’ll have guacamole coming out of my eyeballs,” Obama said. We feel you on that one, Obama. It’s impossible to just eat one… plateful.

Donald Trump – Fast Food

Our newest President has gotten a lot of guff for his eating habits. He’s known for being a junk food aficionado and is often spotted with a bucket or bag from one of the various fast food chains popular in America. From McDonald’s to KFC and Taco Bell, Trump isn’t ashamed of his carefree diet.

Speaking of food, what will you be ordering tonight?
